When I look back at my career in mortgage banking, I realize that my journey has been shaped by much more than professional milestones. It has been shaped by hard work, family, challenges, resilience, and the people I have had the opportunity to serve.
I have spent more than two decades in the mortgage industry, but the lessons that guide me today began long before I entered the business. My experiences growing up, working while attending school, and watching my parents make sacrifices for our family taught me the value of dedication and perseverance.
Those lessons continue to influence how I approach my career and my clients today.
Learning the Value of Hard Work
I moved to the United States when I was 14 years old. I started working while attending high school and continued working throughout college. Those early experiences taught me the importance of showing up, taking responsibility, and making the most of every opportunity.
My parents made many sacrifices to give my brother and me better opportunities. My mother, in particular, has always been an important source of inspiration for me.
When our family faced difficult circumstances, I watched my mother continue to move forward and support us. Her strength taught me that difficult situations do not have to define your future. Sometimes, you simply have to keep going and do the best you can with what you have.
That lesson has stayed with me throughout my career.
Finding My Path Into Mortgage Banking
I earned my BBA in Finance from the University of Georgia. Initially, I thought I would pursue a career in investment banking. However, my professional path eventually took me in a different direction.
In 1999, after the birth of my second child, I entered the mortgage industry as a mortgage banking assistant. Starting at the ground level allowed me to learn the business step by step.
I learned how the mortgage process worked, developed my industry knowledge, and gained an understanding of what clients need when making major financial decisions.
After two years, I moved into an independent banking role and continued building my career.
My professional journey, including the experiences and values that shaped my career, has also been discussed in a published profile about my career, resilience, and professional legacy.
Growing Through Leadership
In 2003, I joined Wells Fargo and helped develop its Private Mortgage Banking Division in New Jersey.
At that point in my career, I was not only focused on my own growth. I was also learning what it meant to lead a team, build relationships, and create an environment where people could succeed.
During my time there, the division grew from three people to 36 direct reports. My group also received recognition for growth and profitability, and I received recognition through the bank’s Leaders Club and Presidents Club programs.
While I am proud of those accomplishments, I believe the most valuable part of that experience was everything I learned along the way.
Starting as an assistant and eventually moving into leadership gave me a broader understanding of mortgage banking. It taught me to appreciate every part of the process and the people who make it work.
What Resilience Has Taught Me
Mortgage banking can be demanding. Market conditions change, transactions can become complicated, and clients sometimes face unexpected challenges.
Over the years, I have learned not to let a difficult situation stop me. Instead, I try to understand what is happening, look at the available options, and focus on finding a practical path forward.
I believe that approach is just as important when working with clients. Buying a home or securing financing can feel overwhelming, especially when someone is unfamiliar with the process. My role is to listen, explain the options clearly, and help clients move forward with greater understanding.
The mortgage industry is also changing rapidly. Technology and artificial intelligence are creating new opportunities to improve and automate parts of the mortgage process. I believe continuing to learn and adapt will remain important as the industry evolves.
Building a Professional Legacy
At this stage of my career, I think about my professional legacy differently.
It is not only about the positions I have held or the recognition I have received. I want my work to reflect hard work, integrity, resilience, and a genuine commitment to the people I serve.
I also hope that, when the time is right, I can pass my business on to the next generation. To me, that would be a meaningful way to continue the values my parents passed down to me.
Today, I continue helping clients navigate their mortgage and home financing options. Every client and every transaction brings an opportunity to learn something new and make the process a little easier to understand.
Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges that helped shape me, the people who supported me, and the clients who trusted me throughout my career.
